WEAPONIZING DOUBT: the toxic practice of truth inversion

WEAPONIZING DOUBT: the toxic practice of truth inversion

July 4, 2025 Off By Mike

When truth is deliberately branded as falsehood, we’re in the realm of disinformation warfare or gaslighting on a societal scale. Some might call it a form of “truth inversion”, where inconvenient realities are dismissed, discredited, or drowned in noise to protect vested interests or preserve narratives. In prophetic terms, it echoes Isaiah’s lament: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil… who put darkness for light and light for darkness.”

When truth is framed as fake news, it becomes more than just a media issue—it’s a crisis of moral imagination. Hearts grow numb not because they do not see, but because they refuse to see. In such moments, the task of bearing witness, of refusing to yield to distortion, becomes a sacred responsibility.

A well-known South African mission leader recently took to social media, claiming that reports of genocide in Gaza are fake, further claiming that mainstream media outlets have admitted to publishing false information.  The following incidents were highlighted in his post:

  • “Israel kills 500 at Al-ahli hospital.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.
  • “14,000 children will die of starvation in 48 hours.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.
  • “Israel killed 31 Palestinians while delivering food.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.
  • IDF raped and killed women at al-Shifa hospital.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.
  • “Israeli forces targeted medical teams and Arabic speakers at Al-Shifa Hospital.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.
  • “BBC releases documentary on children in Gaza.” BBC admits Hamas minister was paid for the documentary, after the damage had been done.
  • “Israel intentionally targets women and children.” Media admits reporting was inaccurate after data proved this false, after the damage had been done.
  • If you’re not noticing a pattern yet, go get your brain checked!

As an investigative journalist, the first impression I got as I scrolled through the claims was the complete lack of verifiable sources—nothing to support or refute the so-called claims of “fake news.” Vague phrases like “The media admits…” or “The BBC admits…” are not valid sources. If one aims to debunk information that is already widespread across global media networks, the counterclaims need to be grounded in factual, verifiable, and reputable sources—not simply claims.

PSYCHOLOGY OF DISTRUST

When we talk about “fake news,” we usually refer to false or made-up news presented as truth. But an even more corrosive tactic is the opposite: presenting truth as “fake news.” That reversal doesn’t just deceive—it undermines the very idea that some things are knowable, trustworthy, or truthful. Once truth itself is treated as suspect, every story, report or expert analysis becomes fair game for dismissal. It places every heartache, hunger, and killing in Gaza under suspicion.  It corrodes compassion and is simply evil.

It is important to recognise this because it WEAPONIZES DOUBT.  Politicians and even religious leaders with specific agendas and special interests will exploit this confusion. They pre-emptively label any inconvenient data as “propaganda,” so when an independent journalist or NGO uncovers inconvenient truths, audiences reflexively disbelieve them. Over time, even well-sourced, meticulously verified reporting loses its audience.

The PSYCHOLOGY OF DISTRUST is that humans lean into confirmation bias: we trust information that aligns with our views and reject what doesn’t. By discrediting true stories as “fake,” manipulators tap into our instinct to protect our worldview, making retractions or corrections nearly impossible to accept.

When truth itself is under attack, we all pay the price. But by recognizing the strategy—by refusing to let cynical labels stand in for real evidence—we can reclaim a shared world of facts and rebuild the trust that undergirds healthy societies.

THE CLAIMS

So, rather than taking the author’s advice to “get my brain checked,” I chose to get the “facts checked”—armed with real, credible sources this time.

1st CLAIM:  “Israel kills 500 at Al-ahli hospital.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.

FACT:  Even though the numbers mentioned in the report were miscalculated at first, it does not detract from the fact that attacking a hospital, under international humanitarian law (IHL), is considered a war crime.

The Al-Ahli Arab Hospital is an 80-bed hospital in Gaza City. It was run by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention between 1954 and 1982, and is still known as the Baptist despite currently being under Anglican management.

On 17 October 2023, an explosion took place in a courtyard of al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City during the Gaza war, resulting in a large number of displaced Palestinians seeking shelter there being killed or injured.  International media initially reported that over 500 Palestinians were killed according to the Gaza Health Ministry, but this was a mistranslation of a report that had mentioned over 500 total victims, including injured. The Gaza Health Ministry later reported a more precise figure of 471 killed and 342 wounded. The Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem, which manages the hospital, reported 200 people killed.

But the attack on the Al-Ahli hospital was not an isolated event.  Since the strike on Al-Ahli Hospital, the World Health Organization reported 51 additional attacks on Gaza health facilities between 7 and 17 October 2023—resulting in the deaths of 15 medical workers and injuries to 27 more.

So yes, the accusation of “fake news” may apply to specific figures, but it doesn’t erase the reality of the attacks. It’s true that 500 people did not die that night—current estimates place the number at 471 dead and 342 wounded. Even if one accepts the Church’s more conservative estimate of 200 fatalities, it remains a sobering tragedy.

And yet, in the face of such suffering, it is deeply disturbing that followers of Christ could become entangled in statistical skirmishes—minimizing trauma, disputing death tolls, and overlooking the sacredness of lives lost by those who were simply seeking refuge.

2nd CLAIM “14,000 children will die of starvation in 48 hours.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.

FACT:  The claim that 14,000 will die is “fake news” is, ironically, true—but only because the true scale of the crisis is even more devastating than initially perceived. Over 71,000 children under the age of five are now at risk of acute malnutrition in the coming year, not 14,000 as mentioned in the original report.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 66 children have already died of acute malnutrition under the tightened blockade as of late June 2025. The World Health Organization reported 57 child deaths from malnutrition by mid-May, warning that nearly 71,000 children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition over the next year without a sustained flow of humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, UNICEF data show 5,119 children (ages 6 months to 5 years) were admitted for treatment of acute malnutrition in May alone—a 50 percent jump from April—and 16,736 children were treated in the first 150 days of 2025 (an average of 112 admissions per day), highlighting the rapidly deepening crisis.

A new analysis by the UN-backed food security alert scale known as the IPC shows that one in five people in Gaza – 500,000 – faces starvation, while the entire 2.1 million population of the Strip is subjected to prolonged food shortages. WHO is a member of the IPC.

But statistics do not bleed. To fixate on numbers is to look away from the unbearable reality: 112 innocent starving children are admitted to hospitals every single day.  What makes the pain of seeing infants starve to death even worse, is that it is preventable.  Israel’s complete aid embargo is a stain on humanity that future generations will view as despicable.

That any follower of Christ would reduce this suffering to a debate over figures is incomprehensible. When the innocent perish, our calling is not to count—but to care.

3rd CLAIM: “Israel killed 31 Palestinians while delivering food.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.

FACT:  Once again, the claim of 31 Palestinians being killed while queuing for food is false only because the numbers are substantially higher.  The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (an independent organisation) reports that since the “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation” started operating on 27 May, the Israeli military has shelled and shot Palestinians trying to reach the distribution points, leading to many fatalities. Reportedly, over 410 Palestinians have been killed as a result. At least 93 others have also been reportedly killed by the Israeli army while attempting to approach the very few aid convoys of the UN and other humanitarian organisations. At least 3,000 Palestinians have been injured in these incidents.

So, yes, it is false news that Israel killed 31 Palestinians while delivering food.  The truth is that at least 500 were killed.

4th CLAIM: IDF raped and killed women at al-Shifa hospital.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.

FACT: This is the one report that is correctly reported to be false.  The claim that “IDF troops raped and killed women at al-Shifa Hospital” is false.

Al Jazeera originally broadcasted a testimony alleging such atrocities, but its video was pulled and the network’s former managing director publicly retracted the story, saying Hamas’s own inquiries found it fabricated. The IDF has also denied the allegations, and no credible evidence has ever emerged to support them.

5th CLAIM: “Israeli forces targeted medical teams and Arabic speakers at Al-Shifa Hospital.” The media admitted that the claim was false, after the damage had been done.

FACT: The assertion that these allegations are false carries both weight and weakness—it holds some merit, yet fails to fully dismiss the core concerns.

It is true that the BBC apologised for one incorrect report but this was not the only incident where the IDF targeted hospitals.  According to the latest health-sector assessments, Gaza’s hospital infrastructure has been all but wiped out:

  • World Health Organization data (May 22) indicate 94 % of Gaza’s 36 hospitals have been damaged or destroyed—approximately 34 facilities—leaving only two fully intact.
  • WHO also reports that just 17 of those 36 hospitals remain at least partially functional, meaning at least 19 have been rendered inoperable by bombing, fuel shortages or occupation .
  • Independent satellite analysis by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency found extensive damage to 24 hospitals across the Strip, documenting strikes, structural collapse and occupation of medical sites .

Weaponizing doubt on the one incident detracts from a brutal and systematic attack on other hospitals and the destruction of the medical network in Gaza

6th CLAIM: “BBC releases documentary on children in Gaza.” BBC admits Hamas minister was paid for the documentary, after the damage had been done.

FACT: The statement is partially true, but it needs important context.

The BBC aired a documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, which featured a 14-year-old narrator later revealed to be the son of a senior Hamas official. The production company, Hoyo Films, paid a small sum—around £790—to the boy’s family via his sister’s bank account. This payment raised concerns because Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization in the UK, and any financial link can trigger legal scrutiny.

The BBC acknowledged “serious flaws” in the production process and removed the documentary from its platform. They emphasized that the payment was made by the independent production company, not directly by the BBC, and that the amount was considered insubstantial. Nonetheless, the incident prompted internal reviews and calls for an independent inquiry.

So, while the BBC did not intentionally fund Hamas, the situation has led to reputational damage and ongoing investigations.

7th CLAIM: “Israel intentionally targets women and children.” Media admits reporting was inaccurate after data proved this false, after the damage had been done.

FACT: Whether Israel supporters want to believe it or not, the original claim of intentional targeting women and children is true – and devastatingly so.  A number of international reports and human rights organizations have alleged that Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in disproportionate harm to women and children.

On Monday 30 June 22, Haaretz news (an Israeli Newspaper) reported that 100,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza.  The death toll in Gaza, as reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry, understates the true scale of the crisis, researchers say. Hunger, disease, and Israeli gunfire at food distribution centers have made the war in the Strip one of the bloodiest of the 21st century

The report is an updated list of those killed in the war, a 1,227-page chart, arranged from youngest to oldest. The Arabic-language document includes the deceased person’s full name, the names of the father and grandfather, date of birth and ID number.

According to the report cited by Middle East Monitor, an estimated 56% of those killed in Gaza as of January 2025 were women and children. This figure comes from a mortality study conducted by Professor Michael Spagat, which surveyed 2,000 households in Gaza. If we apply that percentage to the reported total of 100,000 deaths, it suggests that approximately 56,000 women and children may have died.

This proportion is described as “exceptional” compared to other modern conflicts, with the report noting that Gaza has one of the highest ratios of noncombatant deaths—especially women and children—since World War II.

One final aspect of the reporting deserves attention: the image chosen to highlight the “fake news” from Western Media. Its use feels manipulative, subtly suggesting that all the misinformation originated from Hamas—even though none of the cited sources were actually affiliated with them.  This is an intentional effort to weaponize doubt, connect truth to terrorism and build a momentum of distrust

CONCLUSION

Yes, the curse of fake and inversive news are two of the defining ills of our age—inescapable and corrosive. Whether it’s Western pro-Palestinian media or pro-Israel outlets, distortion and false reports often find a platform on both sides. Yet what cuts deepest is this: even in the midst of unimaginable suffering and trauma, our hearts can grow calloused through suspicion and doubt. Indifference thrives where compassion ought to stir. And that, perhaps, is the greatest danger of all.

Let’s end this article by repeating the words of Hannah Arendt:

The death of human compassion is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism.

If I may rephrase it:

The death of Christian compassion is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a faith about to fall into oblivion
