USA: praying light into darkness
We conclude our 6‑week journey of prayer this week by turning our hearts toward the one nation that holds the key, the future, and, to a large extent, the military arsenal shaping the war in the Middle East: THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Print out the information below, and at any time of day, place the map of the United States before you, light a candle, and hold America before God. Let the flame remind you that Christ’s light still shines in the midst of fear, division, and uncertainty.
INFORMATION
The United States has a population of more than 340 million people, making it the third most populous country in the world after India and China. Its median age is around 38 years, and nearly half of its citizens are under 40. The U.S. remains one of the most globally influential nations, shaping political, economic, religious, and cultural realities far beyond its borders.
America is home to the largest Christian population in the world, even though the percentage of Christians has declined dramatically over the past 50 years. Approximately 90% of American adults identified as Christian 50 years ago (early 1970s), a figure that has declined to roughly 64% by 2020, and about 63% today.
The Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the United States (Approximately 62 million adherents), followed by the Southern Baptist Convention (Roughly 13 million members), which remains the largest Protestant body. While Protestantism as a whole accounts for a larger share of the population (roughly 40-45%), it is split into hundreds of distinct denominations. If viewed as a single group, non-denominational Protestants would rank as the second-largest Christian group in the country, ahead of the Southern Baptist Convention. They now account for approximately 13% of all Protestants and roughly 7% of the total U.S. population
Alongside Christianity, the U.S. hosts vibrant communities of Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists. About 7.46 million Jews live in the U.S., making it the largest Jewish population of any country in the world, even Israel. Muslims account for about 1% of the adult population as do Hindus and Buddhists.
But faith in America is undergoing a major transition from a predominantly Christian nation to a more religiously diverse and increasingly secular society. The most significant shift is the rise of the “nones” — Americans who identify as atheist, agnostic, or “nothing in particular” — now making up about 30% of the population.
Looking toward 2070, projections show Christianity potentially falling from 63% (in 2026) to between 35% and 54% of the population. The religiously unaffiliated could become the largest group, reaching up to 52% in some scenarios. For younger adults, secular identity is becoming “stickier,” meaning those raised without religion tend to remain unaffiliated, while many raised Christian disaffiliate.
The United States is home to 499 distinct people groups, of whom 93 are yet to encounter the gospel in a transformative way. Yet, paradoxically, the nation also sends more missionaries abroad than any other country. America therefore stands as both a mission field and a mission force — a place where faith and culture wrestle daily, and where the Spirit continues to stir hearts toward compassion and justice.
This is the United States we hold before God: powerful, diverse, divided, spiritually restless, strategically placed, and profoundly loved by God.
CONFLICT
In early 2026, the United States became deeply entangled in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. As the war intensified, America found itself pouring staggering sums of money into a conflict largely fought on the frontlines of its allies — Israel and the Gulf states. The financial cost has been immense, and American taxpayers are feeling the weight of it. In the first 24 hours of the 2026 Iran operation alone, the U.S. spent nearly $800 million on missiles and weapons. By the end of the first week, that figure had surged past $5 billion. The two U.S. carrier strike groups stationed in the region cost $18 million per day simply to maintain their position — before a single weapon is fired — adding more than $1 billion in operational costs over the past two months.
As ceasefire efforts collapsed and diplomatic channels faltered, the United States faced the difficult task of balancing its strategic alliances with its moral responsibility to pursue peace. Even as military tensions rose, American diplomats worked to reopen dialogue, facilitate humanitarian aid, and prevent further escalation. Every decision carried immense weight, shaping not only the trajectory of the Middle East but also the global atmosphere of trust, fear, and uncertainty.
This conflict has become a test of America’s identity: will it be remembered for power or for peace, for dominance or for compassion.
This is the United States we hold before God — a nation standing at the crossroads of influence and humility, capable of both great harm and great healing.
INSPIRATION
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remains one of the most luminous American examples of faith expressed through justice and peace. His conviction that love and nonviolence could transform society continues to echo through generations. King’s vision of the Beloved Community — a world where justice and mercy embrace — reminds us that peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of righteousness.
His life and death call the American church to remember that the gospel is not confined to sanctuaries but must be lived in streets, schools, and systems.
King’s legacy still whispers: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”
These are the people we pray for — courageous, compassionate, and committed to seeing God’s Kingdom come in their nation.
INTERPRETATION
We pray to the Lord of light and mercy. As we light our candles, we hold the United States before Him now.
The Indigenous Church
Lord, strengthen Your church in America. Root them in unity, humility, and a united voice for peace. Surround them with Your presence, and let their witness shine like a steady flame. Give them courage to speak truth, unity to stand together, and endurance to love beyond division. Let their hope outlast fear and their compassion outshine anger.
Peace
Let Your peace rest on America and flow like a river into the Middle East — in its cities, its government halls, and its homes. Calm the storms of deep division, silence the rhetoric of hate, and open a path toward healing and mutual respect.
Reconciliation
Heal the divides between races, classes, and political tribes. Where bitterness has grown, plant mercy. Where suspicion reigns, sow trust. Let Your Spirit reconcile hearts across every boundary.
Protection of Civilians
Guard those who protect the borders of foreign nations, in every conflict zone affected by American decisions. Shield the vulnerable, and let no life be lost to pride or power. Turn the nation’s strength toward protection, not destruction.
Wisdom for Leaders
Lord, we pray for the President, Mr. Donald Trump, the United States Secretary of War, Mr. Pete Hegseth, and all those entrusted with decisions that shape global peace. Turn their hearts toward justice and humility. Give them wisdom that protects life and dignity. Let restraint triumph over reaction, and compassion over ambition.
Hope for the Future
Plant hope in the soil of division. Let new possibilities rise — for renewal, for justice, for peace. Shape America’s future not by fear or dominance, but by grace and truth.
Lord, let Your light shine over the United States, and let the darkness not overcome it. Amen.
