My heart bleeds this morning for our beloved family in Syria.  We returned home from this beautiful nation 3 days ago and this morning we were confronted with the news that a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria.  At the time of writing, more than 195 people have been confirmed dead, and over 400 injured.

Add to this the accumulative hardship of 12 years of a relentless and destructive war and words become inadequate to describe what the people of Syria are facing.  Geir O. Pedersen, Special Envoy for Syria, recently described the situation in Syria as a “Crisis of ‘Epic Proportions

  • 15.3 million people — nearly 70% of the population — are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.
  • Amidst a harsh winter and a cholera outbreak, in the north-west alone, 1.8 million people live in camps and overcrowded sites in tents in temperatures below 0°C, with limited or no access to water and health services.
  • There is no or little electricity for most cities in Syria – in Aleppo there was 1 hour of electricity a day before the earthquake struck, and is probably less today.
  • In Syria, 8 out of 10 people earn less than $20 a month while the Syrian pound has plunged 70% in 5 months – almost in tandem with the economic woes of neighbouring Lebanon.

At dia-LOGOS we support a number of Pastors and ministries in this troubled nation. We would love you to pray and to partner with us:  https://dialogos.co.za/projects/
